New Year - Same You

I hate to sound like a cynic, but New Year's resolutions? Bleh... Lemme explain.

Hey sweet friend,

Have you ever wondered about this whole New Year's resolution thing? Like, when and why did people decide that this was the time of year that they would totally overhaul their lives? And the "New Year - New You"? Gimme a break.

I hate to sound like a cynic, but I'll tell you why. It's phony.

Alright, lemme explain. Maybe I'm just a bit grumpy because I'm writing this when I really should be studying the backs of my eyelids in bed, but here I am working to get this idea out of my head.

Here's my thought... Seeds. That's right, seeds. Every year, we get at least a dozen seed catalogs sent to our home in January. Never mind that we have enough seeds in our stash to cover our entire 16-acre property with lush garden plants. So while we don't always buy from the catalogs, they always get me dreaming.

What Seeds Taught Me About Timing

And as I'm sitting here thinking about those seed catalogs, I'm realizing something about why the whole January resolution thing has never made sense to me.

January isn't planting season. It's planning season. It's dreaming season.

The ground is frozen. The soil is cold. Nothing's ready to grow yet. But here we all are, acting like January 1st is this magical moment when we should suddenly have the energy and capacity to transform our entire lives.

We're trying to plant seeds in frozen ground and wondering why nothing grows.

Everything Starts as a Seed

I'm a pattern person. I see connections everywhere. And here's what I keep noticing: everything in life starts as a seed. Ideas. Habits. Changes. They all begin small, and they all need the right conditions to actually take root and grow.

But we skip that part. We skip the soil prep. We skip the "is this even the right season?" question. We just... plant. Because it's January and that's what you're supposed to do.

And then when nothing grows—when the habit doesn't stick, when the resolution falls apart two weeks in—we blame ourselves. We think we're broken. We think we're not disciplined enough.

But what if the timing was just off? What if the soil wasn't ready?

You can have the best intentions in the world, but if you try to plant them in depleted, exhausted ground—in a nervous system that's maxed out, in a body that's running on empty—they won't grow.

They can't.

It's not you. It's the conditions.

New Mercies Every Morning

There's this verse that I keep coming back to: "His mercies are new every morning." (Lamentations 3:23)

Every morning. Not just January 1st.

What if every single day is a new beginning? What if we don't have to get it all figured out in January? What if we're allowed to wait for the right conditions, to adjust as we go, to trust that tomorrow brings its own fresh start?

I almost never make New Year's resolutions. I'm kind of a weirdo like that. I'm a nonconformist—whatever everyone else is doing, I usually question the hell out of it, pick it apart, and maybe put it back together if it makes sense to me.

And this whole January thing? It doesn't make sense.

Because what I see—what the patterns show me—is that you need the right conditions for growth. You need prepared soil. You need a body and nervous system that's actually ready to sustain new habits.

And maybe what we all need isn't another resolution. Maybe what we need is permission to tend the soil first. To rest. To restore. To prepare the ground so that when the right season comes—when our bodies are actually ready—the planting happens naturally.

If You're Already Feeling Behind

Listen, if you're reading this two weeks into January and you're already feeling like you've failed, or if you couldn't even bring yourself to make resolutions because you knew you didn't have it in you—maybe that's not failure.

Maybe that's wisdom.

Maybe your body is telling you something important: the soil isn't ready yet. And no amount of willpower or perfect planning will make seeds grow in frozen ground.

I wrote more about this idea—about recovery instead of reinvention, about honoring where you actually are instead of where you think you should be—in this blog post. If you're curious about this different way of thinking about it, check it out.

You're allowed to be in a different season. You're allowed to prepare instead of perform. You're allowed to wait for the right conditions.

His mercies are new every morning. Not just January 1st. Every. Single. Morning.

With love,
Laura

P.S. Spring always comes. But trying to force it in the middle of winter? That just exhausts the soil. Maybe trust the season you're in. The planting will come when you're ready.
