Your Body Remembers the Rhythm
Even without a school bell, there's still a beat.
Can you feel it too?
When my kiddo was younger, I LOVED school season, maybe even more than she did (although she knows she loved it as well). I mean, what's not to love?! New stuff, familiar faces, and the feeling of being a little more grown up every year.
Now, even though I no longer have a school-aged sidekick to wake up on that first day of school, I still look forward to this season every year. After months of unscheduled, crazy-busy summer life, there is something so satisfying about falling back into the rhythm and schedule that September brings. It feels like coming home… to myself.
And here's the thing—my body still craves this seasonal shift. The shorter days, those monthly holidays stretching ahead, that familiar cadence that seems to reset something deep inside me. It's like my body has this built-in memory of what this time of year means, and it responds whether I'm consciously thinking about it or not.
Maybe you've felt it too. That quiet anticipation, like something's shifting. Even if your days don't revolve around academic calendars anymore, there's this pull toward... something. Fresh starts, maybe. Or just the promise that life might feel a little more manageable soon.
I've been noticing it this week as the light changes earlier in the evening. The way I naturally want to go to bed a little sooner. How I find myself craving warmer foods, cozier spaces. The pull I feel toward quieter activities. Even my shopping habits change—I'm drawn to different things at the store, warmer colors, foods that feel more substantial.
It's funny how this happens without me deciding it should. Like my body just knows.
And you know what? There's something comforting about that. About trusting that some rhythms are bigger than my daily chaos, bigger than my to-do lists and schedules and all the things I think I should be managing better.
This morning I noticed myself reaching for a sweater even though it wasn't really cold yet. Just because it felt right. Because something in me was ready for the shift, ready to move into whatever this season wants to offer.
None of this requires me to DO anything. It's just my body remembering what it knows about this time of year. And maybe that's enough. Maybe I don't have to make it into anything more complicated than that.
You don't need a school schedule to feel this shift. You don't need kids or academic calendars or any external structure at all. Your body knows this rhythm. It's been responding to September for years, whether you've been paying attention or not.
As this week unfolds, maybe just notice what you're naturally reaching for. Earlier bedtimes? Different clothes? Foods that comfort? Maybe you find yourself wanting to organize something, or clean out a drawer, or light a candle earlier in the day.
Maybe that's enough for now. Just noticing. Just letting your body remember what it knows about coming home to yourself. Trusting that some things don't need to be figured out or optimized or turned into a plan.
Sometimes the most important thing is simply recognizing what's already happening.
What about you? What have you been naturally reaching for lately as the season starts to shift? I'd love to hear what your body is remembering about this time of year.
Here’s to trusting the rhythm.
